Some love in all that choas

A panel that was very interesting to me was the one on page 75, on the top. It shows how the new Regime changed the looks of people. On the left you have the women. On the far left is a “Fundamentalist Women”, who is basically covered from veil to toes. While on the right side you a “modern women”, she is dress in a long coat that is few inches above her ankles. With a veil that covers her head. Now that the new Regime has come into act, the whole location and people`s attitude is changing. Some agree with the new Regime, like closing universities so that future generation could learn from the true Islamic path. For Marji and her parents it was the total opposite of what they fought for. Marji`s mother saw firsthand what could happen if they don`t wear the veil. Two Fundamentalists said that women who don`t wear the veil (Marji`s mother wasn`t wearing the veil at that moment) should be basically rape and thrown into the garbage.

“No more University. And I wanted to study chemistry. I wanted to be like Marie Curie.

I wanted to be an educated, liberated women…”

Showing off to the guys.

This quote in pg.73 is meaningful because all the effort her parents and others (with the same mind set) put into the Revolution went to waste because it was like taking a step back. They didn`t want a government like this, while others did. Theywon`t be easy to get their daughter educated, which is really the only thing they can give her. She and her parents want her to be liberated which won`t be as easy if she doesn`t have an education. It was been stated before that it`s harder to control and manipulate educated people, which is what their government is trying to do in my opinion.

A personal connection I made with the text was in “The Letter.” Not because I could relate to it but because it was sweet. It really wasn`t that sweet but I`m a sucker for a love story, but this one didn`t end like most Disney movies but with a dose of reality. It’s also nice that in the middle of all this chaos there is some romance. Then Marji had a love interest herself, but he moves to the U.S. In one panel you see that she threw herself on the floor for him. It’s nice to see her innocents coming out.

Persepolis

One panel that was very interesting was thee bottom left panel on page 25. Marji had just finished hearing her mother tell her the story of how her grandfather was imprisoned and some family history. Her grandfather was the son of the last emperor to be overthrown. He was later name Prime Minister, but had very different views compared to the Shah. Her grandfather studied in Europe and Marx and Lenin, so at heart he was a communist. And for that he would be imprisoned, as a punishment he would sometime be put in a cell full of water. In this panel you see Marji lying down in her tub, for a long time with a very thoughtful look in her head. She is trying to feel how it would have been like if she was in her grandfather`s position. You can see she confused and speechless towards the subject. And right next to her is God  This shows how innocent she is because it’s clear that she doesn`t get the whole concept on war, revolution and corruption.

Active in the political world

“Maybe I`ll be even better as Fidel Castro!” This quote to me was very interesting because she wants to be part of the communist community. She believes it good and should be practice. This could be a beautiful thing, to have everything the same for each citizen. While for American it’s the opposite. Around that same time frame we were fight communism, with the Red Scare and McCarthy “pointing out the red.” It`s hard to say who is right on the issue of politics.

I love the reading because it’s from her point of view, someone who is going through it. Plus her innocent makes tough subject enjoyable and brings in humor. Thanks to her parents I know see that there are laid-back people who were part of the revolution and that there were not all extremist.

The Ways of the EPA

EPA logo

For the last decades the world has been trying to go back into green. It’s clear now that globe warming is true and we can`t afford to go back and clear our mistakes. Now we are trying to start new and stop from making it worse. This whole year is proof that something has changed, it was one hundred degrees Fahrenheit in the middle of October and in that same week it rained. Now you can see the activism going on and the change that is going into effect.

It all started during the 1970s when this green movement started, and now people are starting to change their stands on the issue, “the nationwide surveys began in September 2008, when 72 percent of respondents agreed there was ‘solid evidence’ that average global temperatures had risen over the previous four decades. That number dropped to 52 percent by April 2010, rose to 58 percent by December 2010, dipped again to 55 percent in April 2011, then began rising again, reaching 65 percent this past April” (Basken).

The United States Environmental Protection Agency, also known as the EPA was started under Nixon`s administration. The purpose of the agency was

•The establishment and enforcement of environmental protection standards consistent with national environmental goals.

•The conduct of research on the adverse effects of pollution and on methods and equipment for controlling it; the gathering of information on pollution; and the use of this information in strengthening environmental protection programs and recommending policy changes.

•Assisting others, through grants, technical assistance and other means, in arresting pollution of the environment.

•Assisting the Council on Environmental Quality in developing and recommending to the President new policies for the protection of the environment, and recommending to the President new policies for the protection of the environment. (EPA)

The EPA conducts all types of research, topics range from air, climate change, ecosystems, health, land, waste and cleanup, pesticides, substance and toxic, sustainable practice and water. With their research they take action by word or movements. Projects that improve human health and the environment. They mostly reach to people by their website, government ran page that promotes their values and educated the public. With their rhetoric appeals mostly being ethos, since it is mostly back up by research and science; there is so much information that the EPA provides that it could be a bit intimidating. But they have laid it out very well and added a touch of logos that many concern American could read and understand.

One article, “Climate Impact on Human Health”, divided it into sections depending on the topic and has added pictures and graphs to lighten up the mood. The text its self is simple and very informative. It talks about the effects the change in weather it has on the environment and human health. For example if there was a heat wave diseases could spread faster. A natural disaster could happen which could affect the U.S economy. Urban areas are typically warmer then rural, which in the long run could affect you if you have the air conditioning on, which then could cause air pollution and greenhouse effect to rise. They give you examples that could be very relatable and make you wonder about your current situation. Towards the end they start taking about diseases. The text talks about salmonella and other bacteria-related food and the outcomes, in which one cause could be death.

The website’s purpose is to spread the word on health and environment. It`s audience could be any concerned citizen that want to change or know about the issue. It could be a mother who worries about her daughter`s asthma or a teenager writing a report. The text is mostly appealing mostly to ethos and some logos. Ethos because it is a government run website that its main purpose is to educated the people. The information is gathered by professionals in the field. It is taken from places like the National Academies Press in Washington D.C. They list up to 9 references, which all leads to a different article. Also there is scientific proof behind all of this and graphs to prove it. Pathos is barely touched but could be seen because it makes you want to take action. With the examples that are giving they make you see that you are part of the cycle. Throughout the whole text the tone is simple and serious, making it real. Real as in its happening right now and people should start taking action. Another way they try making people take action is through pictures.

The EPA

In a picture they have it’s filled with bright colors. The background is a peaceful blue with the light of the sun coming through the middle right. From the bottom right there is a wrist coming out with the hand right in the middle. The sun is hitting the hand which is held in a cup position. There is soil in there with a bright green stem coming out, holding up three leaves. Near the hand is a rainbow with the colors red, yellow, blue, and purple shining through the sky.

This picture was found in an article written by a health professor for the EPA. The article itself is very dark and scary because they list new chemicals that could be harmful to the people, but they make a point that it is more harmful to kids and to the environment. Then they talk about testing and how it’s done and how every year there is more and more chemicals added to this list. At the end they give you contacts to contact in case you find chemicals that could be harmful. This could make a person paranoid which causes more fear. And in the middle they give you hope with this colorful photo. Hope because you can see that a plant is growing and the background in bright blue. It`s like saying you future could be filled with failure and guilt but there is still hope. Then you believe in that hope, causing you to join the cause.

The picture mostly uses pathos because it kind of states that it’s in your hand. To protect yourself and family from any harm, this causes a heartache because that is the last thing anyone wants. Followed by this is logos; meaning if you don`t want it to harm your family then don`t buy it. The colors bring back the pathos aspect. Bright colors remind people of happy and good times, and stuff like ponies and babies which makes these chemical even darker and scarier. You just want the brightness to stay because worrying causes stress which people don`t want. Makes you want to join the cause because you want to be happy. Another way people can see the actions is through video.

The EPA has its own YouTube page. In there you can find videos ranging from their missions, to their goals and plan, to changing our current environmental standing. The video “USEPA Scientists at Work: Managing Sewer Overflow”, is two minutes and forty seconds long showcasing their action on this topic.

From the beginning this video is very relatable because it starts showing pictures of communities. This could be any normal community since it shows parking lots of the local supermarket and schools. A female voice talks throughout the whole video in a calm cool collected voice that adds seriousness to its message. It talks about how our sewer systems work and also how they work in different situation, like the day after a big storm. They talk about what the USEPA is doing to change inadequate sewers in older cities. They have their leaders talk about their projects. Their names and titles are listed below their faces with the EPA logo next to it. For example, they show “Dr. Bill Shuster, a USEPA Research Hydrologist” (USEPAgov), talking in a research lab. They follow him to a project location that is right in the middle of a city. This project seems to look so normal that it does not interfere with the everyday of the citizen. The project is very green and colorful that it adds emotions and lively note to the video and the city. The narrator adds comments like it’s getting national acknowledgment and how of a great benefit it could be to the country, not only in infrastructure but also on a health note, reports the USEPAgov.

The video is mostly appealing to ethos throughout the whole video. It`s very informational and educational that its very proper and dry. They list scientific proof to go with the examples, and have professionals in the field talk about it. For example they have a doctor, the Research Hydrologist, talk about the issue and the project. They have a little of logos in there because it’s basically saying here is a solution. The EPA uses mostly ethos, facts are there and its mostly base on research they have conducted. Adding some pathos to catch the reader’s attention and soften the mood. Americans who visit this website will be get educated on the issue and maybe change their stands and take action.

The Up and Down Affect

For Progression two the hardest thing for me has been keeping an interest on the overall subject. It`s weird because for Progression one I enjoyed doing the work, I think it was because it was about me. But now this Progression I decided to work with this subject which I lack interest. I got this subject because I thought I would be able to stop myself from writing my opinion. Which has work but has made Progression two kind of boring, and this causes me to procrastinate. The best part of this Progression though is the fact that we use rhetoric analyzes. I enjoy uses ethos, pathos, and logos and the website to find how they work. This has also opened my mind to many other movement/subject and how they try to persuade us. It’s in everyday life, like the internet and commercials on TV. I would have to say that Progression two made me more aware of my surroundings which is causing me to be more analytical.

The Start of Something…

For essay two I will answer the following question,

What audience is this organization trying to reach, what message are they trying to send, and how are their text, image, and video publications working together to persuade their audience of their message?

I will use the fact that it is a government ran website with very long articles that are very long, informational and educational. I want to add humor because it’s very dry since the website uses mostly ethos, like having professionals with PhDs in that field work and write for them. The website, the United State Environmental Protection Agency, has very “scary” photos, many which have kids in them. But they also have pictures that promise a bright future.

The outline

  • Introduction
  • Background information on the issue
  • Background information the movement
  • Projects
  • How they get their message out
  • Written work
  • Video and pictures
  • How they persuade (ethos, logos, and pathos)
  • Closing

On the Path of a Roller Coster

Throughout Progression One I used Pathos the most. My final essay had lots of emotional and sentimental parts; I wasn`t trying to make people feel sorry for me but it had a tone of hurt and sadness. I talked about how it was growing up with a twin sister that was labeled as gifted while I was behind in school. Most people could relate to that because being compared to a sibling is quite normal. I also think that, that part is more interesting because we are twins. Twins are supposed to be the same in everything. It`s the first thing someone does and say. “Who is the smarter one?”, they always ask. I learned to joke it off.

My mother really took it to heart because I remembered the nights when I would get pinched if I misread a word or missed it. Looking back I`m sure that was not the proper way to handle the situation because I started to hate reading. I can`t really blame it on my mother because at the end I learned and caught up to my class. And to her it was really difficult because she couldn`t see why I was behind.  I have a twin sister, who at an early age was labeled as gifted. I`m pretty sure she would have been embarrassed if I got held back.

I think I made them feel sorry for me. If I was someone else reading my essay I would be happy I wasn`t her (meaning myself.) But at the end I did give them hope, with me graduating with honors. So it was like a roller coaster ride.

For Progressio…

For Progression Two I have decided to work with the Animal Rights Movement. I chose this movement because it’s the one where my bias and stand could stay covered (since we can`t use our views in it.) I would have loved to cover the Presidential Election, but I feel like I won`t be able to control my views and emotions if I wrote about it. I just come off from taking AP U.S Government class in high school which really opened my eyes to the political world, which caused me to have a strong political stance on what I believe in. I didn`t choose the Environment Movement because I find it annoying, and people would easily find out where I stand on this issue. I didn`t choose Same-Sex Marriage movement because I personally think it’s difficult to talk about, because I go back and forth with this issue. And I think the Animal Rights Movement is easier to talk about and relate to because most people have had or have a pet.

From Start to Finish.

When
I start to write or more like when I start to type, I love being in a nice
quiet clean place with air condition. I prefer to be seating at a desk when it
comes to academic writing. For my literacy narrative I choose to type it out at
the library. On the fourth floor because there is less people which mean less noise.
I got pretty lucky and found a table by the window and the last one closest to
the wall. I had a beautiful view of the dumpster and janitor’s quad in the back
of the library. Beyond that I could see Harbor Gill and people walking by. It
was around noon when I started so the room was pretty bright. I put all my junk
away so the only thing on the desk was my laptop. Before I started I did my
routine I was do when I use my laptop. First I went to Facebook, then Yahoo
News, then Yahoo Photos, and at the end checked my emails. After leaning it was
safe for me to start writing away, I started. During this time I also prepared
myself mentally to write 6-7 pages, which I later found it was 3-4 pages. I
finished at the library and when I got home put some finishing touches. In the
morning I made my sister check for misspelling and grammatical errors. After that
I printed it out.

“Se Habla Espanol”

“Se Habla Espanol” was the most interesting literacy narrative I read this week. From the beginning it had a hold on me. First of all, the title, it’s in Spanish. I do read Spanish but I couldn`t understand what it was doing in an English class. After reading about the author and the piece, it made sense. Barrientos kept me engaged throughout the whole narrative because she would very bluntly say what many Latinos think but don`t say. For example “…I enjoyed looking into the faces of Latino store clerks and waitresses and, yes, even our maid and saying “Yo no hablo espanol”. It made me feel superior.” I have thought like her and shame of me because it’s never ok to think you are above someone just because of language. It`s like saying that one language is superior to the other, while the others are second class languages.
Also I could easily relate to her since I always had trouble with my Spanish. I took Spanish class for 4 years because I could not read a damn thing. Now I could read and write but it was embarrassing because Spanish was my first language. There was a point in my life were I told my parents I don`t want to speak Spanish and that I would only talk in English. It didn`t work out and I`m glad it failed because being bilingual is a plus in this world. It`s like another chance of connecting with a human, because we all communicate differently.
Throughout the whole piece she used causal language which made it easier to read. I felt like I was taking to a friend. She mentions her friends, like how their names were “…Heidi and Leslie and Kim.” She would put her humor into it which made me laugh most of the time.
